The Republic of Artsakh, is a de facto nation, not recognized by any member of the UN, self-proclaimed independent of
Azerbaijan.
Located in the southern Caucasus, in the Nagorno Karabakh region, it borders to the west with Armenia, to the south with Iran,
to the north and east with Azerbaijan. The current territorial boundaries were determined at the end of the conflict that broke
out in January 1992, after the declaration of independence and correspond roughly to those of the ancient Armenian region of
Artsakh. Some portions of the territory (part of the Shahoumyan region and the eastern borders of the Martouni and Martakert
regions) are under Azeri control despite being claimed by the Armenians as an integral part of their state.
